ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL IN SCHOOL CAFETERIA
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a grand jury has indicted
two men on charges of gang assault and other offenses in connection with the beating of a 60
year old elementary school principal in the school cafeteria.
Shakur Muhammad, 46 and Henry Timmons, 28, both of 994 East 180th Street, have
been charged with Gang Assault in the 1st degree, Assault in the 2nd degree, Burglary in the 2nd
and 3rd degrees, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The grand jury has also charged
Muhammad with an additional count of Assault in the 1st degree.
Muhammad and Timmons are scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on Tuesday,
February 13, 2007 in State Supreme Court Part A. Both men are facing a maximum sentence of
up to 25 years imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charges of Gang Assault in the 1st
degree or Assault in the 1st degree which are Class B felony offenses. Muhammad is being held
in lieu of $20,000 bond or $7,500 cash. Timmons is being held in lieu of $10,000 cash or bond.
The incident occurred on January 16, 2007 at Community School 6 at 1000 East Tremont
Avenue. The defendants, and at least one other unidentified individual, went to the school and
confronted the Principal, Nicholas Martin, in the cafeteria where they allegedly began to punch
and kick him. The confrontation occurred a short time after the principal had broken up a fight
involving Muhammad’s nine year old grandson and another child. Martin sustained serious
physical injuries as a result of the altercation, including a concussion and cranial bleeding, as
well as bruising and lacerations to his face, back and hips.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Susan Baumgartner.
