GRAND JURY
INDICTS MOTHER IN THE ATTEMPTED DROWNING OF HER FIVE
MONTH OLD DAUGHTER
Bronx District Attorney Robert
T. Johnson announced today that a 25 year old mother
has been indicted in connection with the attempted
drowning of her five month old daughter.
A grand jury has indicted Carol Gonzalez, of 1452
Beach Avenue, the Bronx on one count of Attempted
Murder in the 2nd degree, one count of Attempted Assault
in the 1st degree, two counts of Attempted Assault
in the 2nd degree, one count of Reckless Endangerment
in the 1st degree and one count of Endangering the
Welfare of a Child. Gonzalez is facing a maximum sentence
of up to 25 years imprisonment if convicted on the
most serious offense of attempted murder.
The alleged crime occurred on Tuesday, January 24,
2006 in the defendant’s apartment where, according
to court papers, Gonzalez “did intentionally
attempt to drown her daughter Elizabeth Gonzalez by
submerging her in a bathtub filled with water”
causing the child to suffer loss of consciousness
and respiratory distress.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District
Attorney Asha Vaghela-Behr, Trial Counsel, Child Abuse
/ Sex Offense Bureau.
