BRONX MAN IS SENTENCED TO A TERM OF UP TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR ROBBING A BRONX MAN AT GUNPOINT IN 2004

Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a 33 year-old Bronx man has been sentenced to a term of up to life imprisonment for the gunpoint robbery of a Bronx man in August 2004.

A jury, last month, found Tyrone Minton, of 735 Magenta Street, guilty of one count of Robbery in the 2nd degree, one count of Robbery in the 3rd degree, three counts of Grand larceny in the 4th degree, and two counts of Criminal possession of stolen property in the 4th degree. Acting State Supreme Court Justice Megan Tallmer sentenced Minton to an indeterminate term of twenty years to life imprisonment. Minton, a mandatory persistent violent felony offender, must serve a minimum of twenty years imprisonment before being considered for parole.

The robbery, according to testimony, occurred on August 16, 2004, when Minton approached John Brackett as he walked towards his home in the vicinity of Randall and Soundview Avenues. Minton held a gun to Brackett's back and began riffling through the victim's pockets. Minton stole Brackett's identification, credit and debit cards, $170 in cash and car keys before fleeing in the victim's car.

Brackett flagged down a passing police car and told the officers what had happened. The officers took the victim in their patrol car and canvassed the area. Moments later Minton was spotted in the victim's car. He was apprehended without incident.

Assistant District Attorney Sara Jacobson of the Trial Division prosecuted this case.
