CAREER CRIMINAL SENTENCED TO A MAXIMUM TERM OF UP TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT FOR THE BRUTAL ASSAULT OF A NURSE IN A BRONX HOSPITAL
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a violent career criminal was sentenced to a maximum term of up to life imprisonment for brutally assaulting a nurse at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.
Acting State Supreme Court Justice Martin Marcus sentenced Andre Jeffries to a term of fourteen years to life imprisonment for the attack which occurred on March 2, 2002 in the hospital Emergency Room. Jeffries, aka “Jerry Miles,” of 1704 Morris Avenue, the Bronx, was sentenced as a mandatory persistent violent felony offender. Jeffries was eligible for the life sentence in light of three prior felony convictions, for attempted armed robbery and illegal drug possession while serving time in state prison.
Jeffries pled guilty on November 5, 2004 to one count of Assault in the 2nd degree for attacking Charina Adamos, a 35 year old nurse who was treating a patient when the attack occurred. Adamos was getting the patient a glass of water when Jeffries followed her into a room where the water and ice were kept. When the door slammed shut behind them, Jeffries grabbed the nurse’s clothing and demanded money. He punched the victim repeatedly head and face. When Adamos started screaming, Jeffries shoved his hand down her throat to silence her and ripped her tonsils and soft pallet in the process. Jeffries kicked the victim in the stomach, head and chest before leaving. As a result, Adamos sustained permanent damage to her throat despite surgery to repair her injuries.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Trial Assistant District Attorney Michele Rodney.
