FORMER MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER IS SENTENCED TO A TERM OF UP TO SIX YEARS PROBATION FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING A 14 YEAR-OLD STUDENT
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that Geraldine Malave, a former middle school math teacher at I.S. 339 in the Bronx, has been sentenced for the sexual abuse of a 14 year-old student.
Acting State Supreme Court Justice Steven L. Barrett sentenced Malave, 34, of 2165 Ryer Avenue, who pled guilty last February to one count of Sexual abuse in the 2nd degree, to a term of six-years probation. The defendant was also ordered to register as a level one sex offender for a period of 10 years, and a six year order of protection has been issued to the victim. In addition, the defendant signed a letter permanently revoking her teaching license.
New York City Police Officer’s arrested Malave on June 11, 2003 after the Special Commissioner’s Office of the Board of Education notified the Bronx District Attorney’s Office that the child’s mother came forward with a substantial complaint. A subsequent investigation revealed that Malave had sent a sexually explicit e-mail to the victim. In addition, Malave kissed the victim on numerous occasions.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Johanna Hernandez of the Domestic Violence / Sex Offense Bureau.
