GRAND JURY CHARGES BRONX MAN WITH THE ATTEMPTED MURDER OF SIX POLICE OFFICERS, KIDNAPPING AND OTHER OFFENSES DURING STANDOFF IN HIS GRANDMOTHER’S APARTMENT
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that Adam Perry has been indicted on multiple counts of attempting to murder New York City Police Officers, kidnapping and related offenses and weapons possession.
A grand jury charged Perry, 32, with six counts of Attempted Murder in the 1st degree, six counts of Murder in the 2nd degree, three counts of Kidnapping in the 2nd degree, three counts of Unlawful imprisonment in the 1st degree, three counts each of Criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd and 3rd degrees, and one count of Reckless endangerment.
Perry is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on Friday, April 2, 2004 in State Supreme Court, Part A. Perry was ordered held without bail during a brief court proceeding at Bellevue Hospital, where he is undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
Perry was taken into custody on Saturday, March 13, 2004 following a stand off with police, including hostage negotiators, that lasted several hours. Perry allegedly held his father and two health care attendants hostage in his wheelchair bound grandmother’s apartment. It is also alleged that Perry, during the course of the stand off, fired numerous gunshots through the front door of the apartment , at police officers who were in the hallway outside.
Perry, if found guilty of the most serious charges, could be facing a maximum sentence of up to 25 years to life imprisonment on each of the attempted murder charges and 25 years on each of the kidnapping charges.
