NEW JERSEY MAN INDICTED IN CONNECTION WITH HIGH SPEED CAR CHASE
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a grand jury has charged a 39 year old man with reckless endangerment for allegedly leading police on a high speed car chase that began in New Jersey and ended in the Bronx where the defendant was arrested.
Glen Grossman, of Pennington, New Jersey, was indicted on one count of Reckless endangerment in the first degree, a Class "D" felony offense, and one count of Reckless endangerment in the second degree, a Class "A" misdemeanor. The more serious felony charge is punishable by a maximum sentence of up to seven years imprisonment.
The incident occurred on February 20, 2004 when, according to court papers, the arresting officer saw the defendant make an illegal U-turn and began to follow him. The officer said he recognized the license plate number on the defendant’s car because of police radio transmissions about the car chase earlier in the evening. The defendant allegedly began weaving in and out of traffic while speeding, without signaling and at one point drove onto the sidewalk on East 149th Street, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the path of the approaching car. Grossman was taken into custody when he stopped his car near Southern Boulevard and East 144th Street after driving through a red light.
Grossman is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on March 16, 2004 in State Supreme Court, Part A. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. Grossman could be facing additional charges in the Bronx as well as charges in New Jersey and Westchester County, New York.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Mignone.
