JURY CONVICTS A BROOKLYN MAN FOR ROBBING AN ELDERLY CO-OP CITY MAN
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a 24 year-old Brooklyn man has been convicted of robbing a 78 year-old Co-op City man in April 2002.
A jury found Coreem Myers, of 935 Green Avenue, Brooklyn, guilty of 1 count of Robbery in the 2nd degree. Myers, a predicate violent felony offender, faces a term of up to fifteen years imprisonment when he appears before Acting State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Newman for sentencing on Thursday, June 12, 2002 in Part T15.
Co-defendant Tyrone Bailey, 18, of 3560 Bivonia Street, pled guilty last year to 1 count of Robbery in the 2nd degree. Bailey, a youthful offender, was sentenced to 5 years probation.
The incident occurred when the victim returned to his residence in Co-op City, from a trip to the bank on April 3, 2002. As the victim entered the elevator, Myers grabbed him around the neck and threw him to the ground while Bailey reached into the victim’s pockets and stole $507. The defendants then fled.
Sergeant Richard Lally of the Co-op City Department of Public Safety observed Myers and Bailey running from the building with the victim in pursuit. Detectives Rick Young, Frank Sanchez and Captain Clarence Dickens of the Co-op City Department of Public Safety joined the chase, and the defendants were apprehended a few moments later.
Assistant District Attorney’s Troy A. Smith, and Melissa C. Bitzer of the Trial Division prosecuted this case.
