PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT CHARGED WITH STEALING MORE THAN $50,000 AFTER HOSPITAL AUDITORS UNCOVER TIME SHEET SCAM

Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced today that a 45 year old Physician’s Assistant has been charged with stealing more than fifty thousand dollars by allegedly submitting time sheets for working simultaneous shifts at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Ann Landsman, of 3412 Avenue L, Brooklyn, has been charged with Grand larceny in the second degree and Criminal possession of stolen property in the second degree, both Class C felony offenses punishable by a maximum sentence of up to fifteen years imprisonment.

The theft occurred between January 1, 2002 and September 30, 2003 when Landsman, according to court papers, signed up for simultaneous shifts as a Physician’s Assistant at both Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein Medical Center. Time sheets submitted to each institution indicated that the shifts were worked on the same dates at the same times. Landsman, who earned an annual salary of approximately $78,000, was required to remain on each site for the entire shift. However, investigators uncovered evidence that the defendant split her time between the two medical facilities. She allegedly shuttled back and forth from one to the other, in an effort to attend to the needs of patients in her care. The scam came to light when a doctor, who was affiliated with both institutions, came across one of the defendant’s time sheets. The doctor realized that the defendant could not have been in two places at the same time and notified hospital administrators who contacted the Bronx District Attorney’s Office after conducting an audit.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Eric Hassing of the Arson / Auto / Economic Fraud Bureau.
