2005 Statistical Highlights

Office-wide

  • As in each of the past 16 years, in 2005 the Bronx District Attorney’s Office obtained a higher percentage of felony convictions resulting in state prison sentences than the statewide average.


Appeals Bureau

  • Defendants convicted of felonies won only seven of 179 cases (less than 4%) brought to challenge their convictions.

  • In appeals brought to New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, convictions were affirmed in nine out of 10 cases.

Asset Forfeiture Unit

  • Subjected $276,208 in assets to forfeiture under New York State C.P.L.R. Article 13-A in 2005. The Office shared the money with various authorized recipients including the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the City of New York and the NYPD.

  • Also subjected $1,049,355 in assets to forfeiture under federal law; money was shared with federal authorities and the NYPD.

  • In 2005, this Office provided OASAS with $88,362 for drug treatment and other rehabilitative services pursuant to law under section 13-A.

Crime Victims Assistance Unit

  • Provided initial services to 1,632 victims, witnesses and their families.

  • Major services provided by the unit include information and referrals (36%); supportive counseling (25%); personal advocacy (12%); crisis counseling (7%); Crime Victims Board applications and affidavits (7%); emergency assistance (5%); criminal justice advocacy (4%); relocation (2%); transportation (1%); therapy (1%); and court accompaniment (1%).

  • Services were provided to victims and witnesses in robbery or assault cases (37%); in homicide cases (9%); in cases of sex crimes involving children (19%) and adults (6%); in domestic violence cases (10%); in child or elder abuse cases (8%); and in cases involving other crimes (12%).


Criminal Court Bureau

  • Achieved a 98% misdemeanor conviction rate in the 967 disposed DWI cases in 2005.

  • Bronx Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC) cases represent 98% of the City’s CDRC cases selected by District Attorneys to be prosecuted in Criminal Court. All of the selected cases in the Bronx involved domestic violence.


Detective Investigators

  • Investigated 140 allegations of child abuse and made arrests in 17 of the cases.

  • Conducted 389 investigations involving location of missing, reluctant or additional witnesses.

  • Extradited 73 defendants.

  • Transported defendants in 297 cases.

  • Performed 1,019 criminal history background checks (NYSPIN).


Detective Squad

  • Handled 558 service requests.

  • Made 130 felony arrests.


Investigations Division

  • Achieved a 91% felony conviction rate.


Narcotics Bureau

  • Responsible for 45% of the Office’s felony prosecutions.

  • Sent 917 defendants to prison for felony drug charges, more than any other county in the state.

  • 70% of defendants prosecuted for crimes involving controlled substances received either a state prison or jail sentence (55% and 15%, respectively).

  • 97% of defendants prosecuted for school case crimes pleaded guilty or were convicted after trial.

  • The Bronx Treatment Court processed 151 defendants.

  • In 2005, 949 offenders were placed in alternative-to-incarceration drug treatment programs (a 42% increase over 2004).

  • The bureau’s Narcotics Eviction Unit closed 169 drug locations.


Recruitment Unit

  • Reviewed the applications of approximately 1,000 candidates from 96 law schools in 2005 for the Class of 2006.

  • 28 of the 54 assistant district attorneys hired in 2005 for the Class of 2006 were women, bringing the Office’s percentage of female attorneys to 57%.

  • By the end of 2005, there were 133 Bronx assistant district attorneys, or 34% of the legal staff, who were members of a minority group.

  • As of the end of 2005, 69% of the legal staff were women or members of a minority group.
